India:Sept 30 likely to be last date for filing tax returns

The government may fix September 30 as the last date for filing returns once and for all. Though the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) fixes July 31 for individual tax payers to file returns, it usually extends it to October 31 and beyond.

The announcement of fixing the last date of return is likely to be made during the forthcoming Budget.

During the last year, the CBDT extended the last date for filing income tax and fringe benefit tax returns due by October 31, 2007, for a few more days. For electronic returns for companies and firms requiring tax audit, the date was extended to November 15, 2007. For paper returns, the last date was November 2, 2007.
